THE
R OS TAPESTRY 800 EXPO
7th, 8th & 9th September 2007
In
celebration of the 800th Anniversary of the foundation of
the town of New Ross; a Norman Festival showcasing the Ros
Tapestry project was held on the
7th, 8th and 9th September 2007 in the Ross 800 Pavillion
in New Ross Town Park, Co Wexford.
A dramatic exhibition of seven completed tapestries and eight
cartoon images vividly tracing the history of the founding
of New Ross by William Marshal in 1207 were displayed to great
acclaim and celebration for the very first time.
There
were also interactive stitching demonstrations and presentations
from the Ros Tapestry Embroiderers, period music performances
from Estonia's acclaimed Medieval Musicians 'Rondellus' and
'Nonesuch' and a local medieval musical trio.
Family
Entertainments included a Norman encampment featuring living
history re-enactment comprising medieval pageantry, weapons
displays, craft demonstrations and activities for all the
family by the Leinster Re-enactment Society and the Harlech
Medieval Society from Wales. Falconry displays from 'Animal
Magic' who provided a realistic medieval flavour with their
action packed demonstrations involving hawks, falcons and
owls. Juggling feats and medieval entertainment from the Ros
Tapestry jester on stilts and William Marshal, founder of
the town of New Ross and Isabel de Clare paraded on horse-back
in the Pavilion grounds.
Finally
aRos 800 Celebration Feast was held at the Ross 800 Pavilion.
It comprised of a Norman Banquet featuring exotic glories
of the medieval table specially prepared by Phelim Byrne and
presented by internationally acclaimed chef Kevin Dundon of
Dunbrody House Hotel with musical entertainment from 'Rondellus',
a prize winning ensemble specialising in early chamber music.
